I've just been booked to do a Christmas wreath/decoration making session at a local castle, and whilst I'm planning on mostly doing ivy/holly/pinecone/ribbon wreathes with most visitors, I want to do a shorter candle ring version with smaller children who may not have the attention span or dexterity to handle a full sized wreath.

I need to find a very cost effective but stable base for a candle that I can then help them wire leaves and beads to, but I'm drawing a bit of a blank, most of the off the peg candle holders I'm finding are spiked for poking into oasis, so I either need inspriation for something else commercially available, or I need to conjur up an alternative.

I'm currently wondering about getting in a new pack of crown caps from a brewing supplier and hot glueing them onto some sort of base, maybe card, maybe something else. Then I can melt a candle into the cup that creates and all they'll need to do is twiddle together the decoration and have some help to wire it down securely.

Anyone got any better ideas for me?

erm what about tea lights? I'm assuming you want to stick a long candle in the decoration not a tea light. but you could buy some tea lights.. remove the candle inside that leaves you with a metal case, that you could then stick/ melt the long candles into ?

I thought about tea lights, but as tea lights the flame is a bit too close to any decoration, and just as holders, they are too fat for a standard 'dinner candle'. I thought about the screw caps from wine bottles too, but thats a lot of wine even if I scrounge from friends!

What about small branches/large twigs, make a candle size hole, then wire on the foliage.

too wide again, they are sized for tealights, I need something that will take a dinner candle.

I'm seriously thinking a bag of bottle screwcaps hotglued to 3inch cake discs might be the best solution at the moment. I can pre-drill the cake bases to take the fine wires to secure the decoration then

Thats nice, would eat the entire budget though as I can only charge the participants 50p for materials, so I'd have to sub the wires, ribbons etc, but may be an option

Screw caps aren't really going to hold a candle. Inch sections of plastic pipe, silicon sealed to wood or card base?

Nice idea, will see if I can find some small logs suitable to be sawn and drilled to suit, that may work well, though if I get dozens of people it might be compliacted to provide enough of them, but certainly for some to start the day with

On a small cake base that might do the trick, was a bit worried about it wobbling out of shape by the time they got it home and lit the candle? Hopefully their parents would be sane enough to check that sort of thing though

There is always the air drying clay. Once it's set it should hold it's shape.

I spent ages looking for holders for a stained glass sconce and gave up in the end.I have now seen people using a disc of wood with a screw through it and you just screw the candle down on to it
